Candidate for Secretary
After a successful career in software development and testing in the defense and telecommunications industries, Sandy Joiner became a parent advocate for her children’s education. As her three sons moved through the Wake County Public School System, she volunteered as the parent Board Advisory Committee representative for three years. By thoroughly researching school population trends and housing growth in her part of the county and presenting her findings to the school board, Sandy influenced several far-reaching student reassignment plans that threatened to disrupt the neighborhood school concept.
During this same time, she volunteered on multiple Cary Town Council member’s election campaigns as well as a campaign for State Representative. Over the last few years, she has helped fight a new math curriculum in middle and high school that has had a devastating effect on student achievement and morale. Most recently, Sandy worked diligently as a campaign manager for a successful Wake County school board candidate and is currently the campaign manager for a Cary Town Council candidate.
Sandy is a board member of the Western Wake Republican club and the Carolina Teachers Alliance and an associate member of the Republican Women of Cary & Southwestern Wake club, the Capital Area Republican Women Virtual Club, and the Wake County Republican Women club.
Sandy grew up in Louisiana where she learned the value of education from her mother who was a teacher and an assistant principal. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She moved with her husband Tom to Cary, North Carolina, in 1990 and has lived here since raising her three boys.
